Within three weeks all but one of the children’s titles is checked out right now and 9 of the 15 books for adults are checked out as well. Some titles even have waiting lists. Obviously there was a need for these books.

Library Collections Program

Love to Read

Public and elementary school libraries lack books about persons with disabilities. With private and public financial support of public libraries and schools on the wane and the relatively small user population for these books, libraries are often unable to increase the special needs books in their collections.

To fill this void, the Center's Library Collections Program provides free of charge: (1) to public libraries, 15 resource books for parents and educators of children with special needs and 10 children's books written primarily about children with disabilities and their peers and siblings without disabilities; and (2) to elementary school libraries, a 10-book children's collection.

The Center has provided both collections to all Maine and Massachusetts public libraries, and the Children's Collection has been distributed to more than 250 Maine elementary schools.
