Public and elementary school libraries have lacked books about people with disabilities. With private and public financial support of public libraries and schools on the wane, libraries are often unable to increase the books about disiblities in their collections.
With the generous support of foundations, corporations and publishers, the Center's Library Collections Program has presented to libraries 15 resource books for parents and educators of children with special needs and 10 children's books about children with disabilities and their peers and siblings. We donate a 10-book children's collection to elementary school libraries.
The Center has provided both collections to all Maine and Massachusetts public libraries, and the Children's Collection has been distributed to more than 250 Maine elementary schools.
